10th World Water Forum kicks off

The 10th World Water Forum, themed "Water for Shared Prosperity", officially opened on Monday in Bali, Indonesia.

The opening ceremony saw participation from global officials and United Nations representatives, focusing on critical issues such as water conservation, clean water and sanitation, food and energy security, and natural disaster mitigation.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo emphasized the vulnerability of 500 million small farmers, who are responsible for 80 percent of global food production, to future drought conditions by 2050. He called for strengthened global collaboration to tackle water-related challenges effectively.

World Water Council President Loic Fauchon highlighted the unifying power of water and the environmental damage inflicted by human activities. He called for collective efforts to mend the planet and ensure hope and security for future generations.

Li Guoying, China's Minister of Water Resources, stressed the pressing global challenge of water security and the necessity of fostering shared prosperity through robust water management.

He outlined three initiatives drawn from China's experience, aimed at addressing governance deficits, enhancing flood control and water supply security, ensuring food and ecological security, and expediting the progress of global water governance.

The World Water Forum, organized every three years since 1997 by the World Water Council and the host country's government, is the largest international event dedicated to water issues.
