3 countries recognize Palestine as a state
Norway, Ireland and Spain announced their recognition of Palestine as a state on Wednesday.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store and Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, and Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris, announced the decisions respectively.
The recognition will come into effect on May 28, according to the statements issued by the three countries.
Also on Wednesday, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) issued statements, highly commending and welcoming the three countries' decisions.
On May 10, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) overwhelmingly adopted a resolution declaring Palestine's eligibility for a full UN membership.
Adopted with 143 votes in favor, nine against, including the United States and Israel, and 25 abstentions, the resolution states that "the State of Palestine should therefore be admitted to membership" and "recommends that the Security Council reconsider the matter favorably."
