529 South Korean medical professors on indefinite strike

Over 500 medical professors at hospitals affiliated with Seoul National University (SNU) have taken part in a collective suspension of patient treatment, in protest of the government's medical reforms.

A total of 529 professors at the four hospitals - SNU Hospital, SNU Bundang Hospital, Seoul Metropolitan Government SNU Boramae Medical Center, and SNU Hospital Healthcare System Gangnam Center - have joined the strike, accounting for 54.7 percent of clinical professors across the four locations.

As hospitals will continue to provide care for patients with critical or rare diseases, the actual number of treatments is expected to decrease by 40 percent due to the walkout.

In addition, the Korean Medical Association announced that it would suspend all medical services from June 18 to support medical interns and residents against the government's plans to expand medical school enrollment.

In response, the South Korean government has decided to implement rotation duty for severe emergency medicine cases starting Monday. The government also asked medical institutions in the Seoul metropolitan area, Chungcheong Province, Jeolla Province, and Gyeongsang Province to make a scheduling plan to ensure that at least one institution in each region is responsible for emergency treatment at night and on public holidays.
