600kw EV supercharging stations put into operation in Beijing

The State Grid Corporation of China recently has put into operation its first two 600-kilowatt public supercharging stations in Beijing, which together serve an average of 700 electric vehicles (EV) per day.

The two charging stations are located in the southwest parts of the Chinese capital. They are separately a 480-kilowatt main charger that supports three piles and charges six cars at a time, and a 640-kilowatt main charger that supports four piles and charges eight cars at a time.

"The first two supercharging stations have an average daily capacity of serving up to 700 cars. They adopt a 1,000-volt high-voltage technology platform and liquid-cooled supercharging technology, which enables the maximum output power of a single plug to reach 600 kilowatts. They can meet both the general charging needs of vehicles and the fast charging needs of EVs with super charging battery technology within 10 minutes," said Huang Yu, a project manager of State Grid (Beijing) New Energy Vehicle Service.

"It feels pretty good so far. The equipment is new, and more importantly, it charges faster," said Mr. Qi, an EV driver.

The state-owned electricity company plans to build nine more supercharging stations in different areas of Beijing, which together with the two existing stations will serve more than 8,000 EVs across the city per day.

According to the National Energy Administration, China had already installed 10.60 million EV charging piles by the end of July, up 53 percent year on year. Of them 3.209 million are public charging points and 7.394 million private ones.
