Appetite for Zongzi grows in China as Dragon Boat Festival approaches
With just a few days to go before the Dragon Boat Festival or the Duanwu Festival, which falls on June 10 this year,
China's appetite for Zongzi, a popular snack traditionally enjoyed during the festival, is growing, with both traditional and innovative flavors being rolled out to satisfy different people's taste buds.
Zongzi is a pyramid-shaped dumpling made of stuffed glutinous rice steamed in bamboo or reed leaves.
A host of ingredients is needed to make the delicate, colorful Zongzi, such as broth made from wild plants like butterflybush flower, glutinous rice, rose petals, jujubes, chopped ham, and the indispensable bamboo or reed leaves.
Colorful Zongzi must be steamed instead of boiled so the leaves used to wrap the stuffing keep their vibrant green color and the glutinous rice is more appetizing.
The stuffing is either sweet or salty.
