Aurora graces night sky in north, northwest China

Auroras, or northern lights, were seen at several places in north China's Hebei Province and northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on Friday morning because of a massive geomagnetic storm.

In Chengde City of Hebei, rare aurora illuminated the sky above the Great Wall. The colorful aurora lights, magnificent Great Wall and dreamy Milky Way created a near surreal moment.

In Altay Prefecture in northwest China's Xinjiang, photography enthusiasts captured the amazing sight of aurora.

At first, the aurora showed dim red light. Then the red, green, and purple lights overlapped in the night sky, creating a stunning scene.

The aurora is caused by the collision of charged particles directed by the Earth's magnetic field. The phenomenon is usually observable in areas close to the Earth's north pole.
