Boeing to cut 10% of workforce

Boeing said on Oct. 11 that it will lay off 10 percent of its workforce in the coming months and cut its production amid a month-long strike.

The job cuts will impact roughly 17,000 workers across all levels of the company, Boeing said, adding that it will end production of its 767 freighter in 2027 after completing the current orders for 29 jets.

It also delayed the rollout of its new 777X to 2026, following years of certification delays and the recent discovery of a defective part that grounded test flights earlier this year.

In a note to employees, Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg said the company had to reset its workforce levels to align with its financial reality.

Around 33,000 workers at Boeing's West Coast factory had been on strike since September 13, causing the suspension of production for several aircraft models. Boeing and the union representing the workers have not yet reached an agreement on salary issues.

International credit rating agencies are considering revising their ratings for Boeing. The Standard and Poor's said that due to losses and production halts caused by the strike, they are considering lowering Boeing's credit rating. Fitch Ratings has highlighted the increased operational risks for Boeing but has not yet disclosed the results of their assessment.
