Car wash in east China's Jiangxi helps disabled people with jobs

A car wash in east China's Jiangxi Province offers jobs for mentally challenged people, helping them to regain confidence and relieve the burdens on their families.

The car wash, which opened in March this year, now employs seven mentally-disabled people.

At an average age of 24, their intelligence is equivalent to that of six or seven-year-old children.

In spite of that, they observe the same washing standards, and offer the same services and prices as their healthy peers.

The customers are satisfied with their work.

"They would wash cars really cleanly and thoroughly and for the nooks inside the car, they would wash them very carefully and very well," said Su Wen, a customer.

"Their washing service is fairly good. Although a little bit slow, but it feels rather nice after washing," said Jian Xiaodong, another customer.

Lan Hao, 27, is one of the seven car washers.

Due to a lack of oxygen at birth, his mental development has been limited.

He said he is satisfied with his job as it brings joy to him.

"I like working here so much as washing cars will get paid," he said.

Hu Xiaojin, the owner of the car wash, said she wants to help her employees to become more confident with such a job.

"Now, when a car comes, you can't stop them and they will scramble to wash it. They have an income and such a working environment. So the burdens on their parents are relieved. They are independent which reduces the economic pressure on their parents, right? Offering them a job helps them to be self-confident and self-reliant," she said.
