Children's abacus contest held in Beijing

A children's abacus contest was held on August 03 at the National Speed Skating Oval in Beijing, aiming to test the youngsters' calculation skills using the time-honored counting device.

The event, sponsored by the China Children's Culture and Art Promotion Association, saw 1,685 young contestants from 143 teams across 22 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities in the country taking part.

The contest featured intense individual and team events, with contestants displaying remarkable speed and precision in their calculation abilities.

"Practicing abacus calculation enhances my memory and helps me focus. I have also made great progress in my studies, especially in mathematics," said Li Zehan, a student.

The abacus is an ancient calculating method with a history of over 2,500 years. It is regarded as the fifth invention in Chinese history and was listed as a national-level intangible cultural heritage in 2008.

The Zhusuan, otherwise known as the Chinese abacus, was officially listed as an intangible cultural heritage at the eighth Annual UNESCO World Heritage Congress in 2013.

"Abacus education is an excellent historical culture that has been passed down for over 1,800 years in China. It is recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage and was listed as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the United Nations in 2013. We hope to build a platform for more students and children to share their abacus cultural memories to keep them more motivated in the study and inheritance of this tradition," said Li Wei, Chairman of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Committee at the China Children's Culture and Art Promotion Association.
