China approves establishment of first national innovation center in mineral resources sector

China has approved the establishment of its first national-level innovation center in the mineral resources sector, namely the National Strategic Technology Innovation Center for Efficient Development of Rare Minerals, the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC) of the State Council said on Tuesday.

The technology innovation center is organized by the government of Hunan Province and SASAC and sponsored by the country's largest metals and minerals group, China Minmetals Corporation, along with other units. The center holds significant importance in ensuring national mineral resource security and strengthening industrial oversight.

The center prioritizes ensuring the secure supply of scarce mineral resources and aims for green, intensive, and efficient development and utilization of these resources. It seeks to achieve breakthroughs in key technological areas such as efficient mining, clean smelting, and digital and intelligent development within the sector. The center's overarching goal is to establish a strong support system for exploring and developing national strategic rare minerals.
