China files complaint at WTO over Canada's unilateralism, trade protectionism practices
China has filed a complaint at the World Trade Organization (WTO) over Canada's unilateralism and trade protectionism practices, the Ministry of Commerce said on Wednesday (Oct. 02).
The ministry said it has also initiated an anti-discrimination probe into Canada's restrictive measures targeting certain imports from China.
Canada announced earlier that it would impose a 100 percent tariff on imports of Chinese electric vehicles from Oct 1, or Tuesday, and a 25 percent tariff on imported steel and aluminum from China starting Oct 22.
The Chinese ministry said Canada has repeatedly disregarded objective facts, ignored international economic and trade rules, and insisted on following certain countries in taking unilateral suppressive measures against China despite opposition and dissuasion from many parties.
It also said Canada's such practices violate the principles of market economy and fair competition, undermine normal economic and trade cooperation between Chinese and Canadian companies, severely impact China-Canada economic and trade relations, and disrupt and distort the global industrial and supply chains, noting the Chinese side firmly opposes such actions.
