China - Japan Premiers meet in Seoul

Chinese Premier Li Qiang met with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on the sidelines of the ninth Trilateral Summit Meeting among China, Japan and South Korea in Seoul on Sunday.

Noting that the meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and the Japanese prime minister in San Francisco last year, where the two leaders reaffirmed comprehensively advancing the strategic and mutually beneficial relations between China and Japan, Li said the meeting provided important political guidance for the development of bilateral relations.

Li said China hopes Japan would stay true to its commitments, properly handle issues involving history, the Taiwan question and other subjects, and work with China to build constructive and stable China-Japan relations that fit the needs of the new era.

Li also urged Japan to earnestly fulfill its responsibilities and obligations regarding the release of the nuclear-contaminated wastewater from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, saying the release of the wastewater bears on the health of humanity.

Kishida said constructive and stable Japan-China relations are beneficial to not only the two countries, but also the world. He said Japan is willing to maintain and strengthen the good momentum of cooperation between the two countries, and comprehensively advance the strategic and mutually beneficial relations between Japan and China.

The two sides agreed to strengthen dialogue and communication at all levels and convene at appropriate times the new round of China-Japan high-level economic dialogue and the meeting of the high-level consultation mechanism on people-to-people and cultural exchanges between China and Japan.
