China-Laos Railway has handled 38 mln passenger trips

As of Aug. 20th, 2024, the China-Laos Railway had handled over 38 million passenger trips and operated 56,000 passenger trains since its launch on Dec 3, 2021, according to the China State Railway Group Co., Ltd., the state railway operator.

The service has attracted 252,000 international travelers from more than 100 countries and regions for cross-border trips.

The introduction of favorable policies such as the "144-hour visa-free transit", which allows visitors from 54 countries to enter China and stay for up to 144 hours without a visa for short-term activities, has led to a steady increase of inbound travelers.

This year, the railway has handled around 12.73 million passenger trips, marking a 11.9 percent year-on-year increase.

As a landmark project of high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, the 1,035-km China-Laos Railway connects Kunming, capital of southwest China's Yunnan Province, with the Laotian capital Vientiane.
