China-Laos Railway sees 31 pct growth in freight volume in Jan-May

In the first five months of 2024, the China-Laos Railway, an important transport corridor connecting China with Southeast Asia, transported 2.3 million tons of import and export goods, a year-on-year increase of 31 percent, according to customs in the southern Chinese border province of Yunnan.

A total of 3,076 freight trains operated on the cross-border railway during the period, representing a year-on-year increase of 30.6 percent.

The China-Laos Railway, a landmark project of high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, began operations in December 2021. The 1,035-kilometer railway connects Kunming, the provincial capital of Yunnan, with the Lao capital Vientiane.

Since its operation, the number of cross-border freight trains running on the China-Laos railway every day has increased from two to 20, and the categories of imported and exported goods have expanded to more than 3,000.

The China-Laos Railway provides services to more than 3,800 companies in all provincial-level regions in China and transports cargo to 15 countries. The commodities carried by the railway have gradually grown more abundant, continuously injecting strong impetus into the trade between China and ASEAN.
