China marks 2,575th anniversary of Confucius' birth

A grand memorial ceremony for Confucius was held on Saturday to commemorate the 2,575th anniversary of the birth of the renowned ancient Chinese philosopher and educator in his birthplace Qufu, east China's Shandong Province.

The ongoing 2024 China International Confucius Cultural Festival, which kicked off on Sep. 27 in Qufu, has attracted a large number of guests from home and abroad, including 400 foreign attendees, such as ambassadors and consuls from 36 countries and regions.

As part of the festival, the memorial ceremony at the Temple of Confucius incorporated music, songs, dances, and rituals that embody Confucian thought.

Attendees entered through the Yangsheng Gate to participate in the temple opening rituals before moving to the Dacheng Hall, where they presented flower baskets at the statue of Confucius.

A memorial text was read by a senior government official, followed by attendees bowing down before the statue to pay their respects to the influential ancient philosopher.

The tradition of the Confucius memorial ceremony dates back to 478 BC.

It has evolved into an opportunity for Chinese people to get together to honor their ancestors, and perform time-honored traditions so as to uphold the virtues of their rich cultural heritage and promote the traditional Chinese culture.

People from more than 60 Confucian temples, academies and institutions from both home and abroad paid tribute to Confucius online, showcasing the influence of Confucian culture worldwide.

Confucianism has profoundly influenced China's development and played a role in advancing human civilization.
