China - Vietnam first ladies chat over tea in Beijing

Peng Liyuan, wife of Chinese President Xi Jinping, chatted over tea with Vietnamese first lady Ngo Phuong Ly in Beijing on Monday.

Ly is accompanying her husband -- General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee and Vietnamese President To Lam - on a three-day state visit to China from Sunday to Tuesday.

Peng recalled with pleasure the experience of accompanying Xi on his state visit to Vietnam in 2023.

She said that China and Vietnam are friendly neighbors connected by mountains and rivers, enjoying cultural proximity in such fields as literature, art and cuisine. She said she expects both sides to strengthen exchange and cooperation, deepen mutual understanding, and advance the cause of China-Vietnam friendship.

Noting that Vietnam has made significant achievements in promoting the development of women's cause, including the education of girls and women, Peng said the two sides need to enhance exchange and mutual learning.

The two sides should encourage young people to learn each other's languages to foster friendship, she added.

Peng invited Ly to watch the performance of Chinese opera, dances, and folk music together.

Ly expressed gratitude to Peng for her warm reception and thoughtful arrangements, and admiration for Peng's active contribution as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) special envoy for the advancement of girls' and women's education. She also spoke highly of the wonderful performances of the Chinese artists.

Ly said that she is interested in the extensive and profound Chinese culture, and looks forward to increasing exchange and mutual learning between Vietnamese and Chinese cultures.

The two sides should further boost women and youth exchange, deepen mutual understanding, and strengthen friendship between the peoples, she said.
