China willing to promote steady, sustained bilateral relations with UK
China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning on Thursday announced that British Foreign Secretary David Lammy will visit China, saying that China is willing to promote steady and sustained development of bilateral relations with the United Kingdom (UK).
"At the invitation of Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and minister of foreign affairs, Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs of the UK David Lammy will pay an official visit to China from Oct. 18 to 19," Mao said at a regular press briefing in Beijing.
"Both China and the UK are permanent members of the UN Security Council and major economies in the world. The long-term and steady development of bilateral ties serves the common interests of both countries, and contribute to the joint international response to global challenges, and to world peace and development. This visit is the first by a cabinet minister from the new British government to China. The two sides will conduct in-depth discussions on implementing the important consensus reached by the two leaders' during their phone talks in August, focusing on enhancing strategic mutual trust and strengthening dialogue and cooperation across various fields," Mao said.
Chinese President Xi Jinping talked with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at the latter's request over phone in late August, during which he said China and Britain should remain firm as partners, strengthen dialogue and cooperation, and benefit the two countries and the world through a stable and mutually beneficial China-Britain relationship.
"China stands ready to work with the UK to remain firm as each other's partners, stay open and engaged in cooperation, and promote mutual benefits, so as to advance the steady and sustained development of China-UK bilateral relations," said Mao.
