China's 1st nuclear-powered steam project for industrial use put into operation

China's first nuclear-powered steam supply project for industrial purpose, known as the "Heqi-1" project, has been officially completed and put into operation on Wednesday at Lianyungang City in eastern Jiangsu Province.

The project is one of China's first batch of green and low-carbon advanced technology demonstration engineering projects, demonstrating green, safe, stable, and highly-efficient features.

The project will transport 4.8 million tons of zero-carbon clean steam each year from the Tianwan Nuclear Power Station, a subsidiary of China National Nuclear Corp, to a petrochemical base in Lianyungang.

The project will help to reduce the burning of standard coal by 400,000 tons per year, with equivalent reduction of 1.07 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions, paralleling with the creation of an additional afforestation area spanning 2,900 hectares.

"In the future, we will foster and incubate a new batch of nuclear energy multi-purpose tech-applicable projects, vigorously boosting comprehensive utilization of nuclear energy and wide-ranging application of nuclear technology in industries, agriculture, healthcare, environmental protection and security," said Huang Ping, secretary-general of China Atomic Energy Authority.
