Nearly half of China's mobile phone users have 5G mobile devices

Nearly China's users of 5G mobile devices accounted for almost half of the total, official statistics show.

On March 25, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology released the statistics on China's communications industry for January and February.

According to the data, by the end of February, China had a total of 1.746 billion mobile phone users, of which 851 million are 5G device users.

The data also shows that China's cumulative mobile internet traffic reached 48.76 billion gigabytes, of which the traffic accessed by 5G users increased by 59.8 percent year on year, accounting for 53.3 percent of the total.

Zhang Lixian, a senior researcher of the Strategic and Industrial Research Center at China Mobile Research Institute, said the rapid growth indicates a landmark in China's communications and digital development.

"China's 5G development is maturing quickly, laying a solid foundation for a fully digitalized era," Zhang said.

Since the government first issued 5G licenses for commercial use in June 2019, China has been gradually expanding 5G internet coverage from cities to all counties and townships in the border areas. By the end of February, more than 3.50 million 5G base stations had been deployed across the country.
