China's burgeoning pet economy spurs rise of new profession

The skyrocketing pet ownership across China gives rise to the role of pet trainers, a new profession dedicated to teaching dogs basic obedience and advanced performance activities.

He Shengyu, a dog lover with two years of military dog handling experience, started his own dog training school in Wuhan, capital of central China's Hubei Province.

The training school now keeps over 60 dogs.

"Our courses are customized according to the needs of dog owners and the characteristics of dogs. For example, we will do potty training and instruct dogs to pull baskets or fetch parcels," said He, who has so far trained over 30 dogs.

With a delicate balance of sensitivity and expertise, pet trainers like He help pet owners better understand and communicate with their furry friends, fostering stronger bonds and healthier lifestyles.

"I will do my own research by searching for information online or reading papers to learn about their eating habits and their characteristics. Of course, we need to be patient with them and love them," He said.

To date, He has opened two more pet training schools and employed over 30 full-time pet trainers, all of whom were young people born after the year 1995 with an average monthly salary of more than 12,000 yuan (about 1,651 U.S. dollars).

Statistics show that there are nearly 1,000 pet trainers in the city of Wuhan.
