China's first high-power hydrogen energy locomotive to be put into operation
China's first high-power hydrogen energy shunting locomotive will soon be put into operation, with a maximum power of 2,400 kilowatts and a maximum load capacity of 10,000 tonnes.
The hydrogen-powered locomotive, developed by CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive Co., Ltd. and China Energy Group, is equipped with a hydrogen fuel cell and a lithium power battery, boasting multiple power supply modes, which will significantly reduce air pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions.
"This hydrogen-powered shunting locomotive is not only energy-efficient and environmentally friendly but also extremely powerful. It has a design speed of 100 kilometers per hour, and its maximum traction load reaches 10,000 tonnes," said Song Wei, instructor at Xinshuo Railway Locomotive Company under China's energy giant CHN Energy Investment Group (CHN Energy).
At present, the locomotive has already completed tests on its power system and key components regarding durability and performance in high- and low-temperature environment, and will soon be put into use.
On June 2, the country's first heavy-load railway hydrogen refueling research and demonstration station was put into business in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
Located in Ordos, a prefecture-level city of Inner Mongolia, the Batuta hydrogen station under CHN Energy mainly provides services for domestic heavy-duty hydrogen-powered shunting locomotives and zero-emission catenary working vehicles supported by hydrogen fuel cell and lithium-ion power battery.
"Here, we are showcasing the country's first heavy-load railway hydrogen refueling station - the Batuta hydrogen station. The station is equipped with the world's first low-temperature-resistant automatic refueling and hydrogenation robot, which can achieve all-weather continuous operation at temperatures as low as minus 25 degrees Celsius," said Guo Zhipeng, technician at Guohua Energy Investment Co., Ltd. (Guohua Investment), a subsidiary of CHN Energy, while attending the 2nd Western Hydrogen Energy Expo held in northwest China's Yulin City, Shaanxi Province from Wednesday to Thursday.
The hydrogen fuel, if fully loaded, can enable the locomotive to run continuously for 12 hours, with a cruising range of up to 800 kilometers. Such a locomotive is expected to reduce fuel consumption by 164 tonnes and carbon dioxide emissions by about 508 tonnes per year.
"The hydrogen dispenser is designed with advanced control strategies, achieving a hydrogen filling rate of 7.2 kilograms per minute, which is twice that of traditional hydrogen stations. Additionally, the station can fill up a hydrogen-powered locomotive in as short as as 30 minutes," said Zhang Kai, staff member with Batuta hydrogen station.
