China's Yunnan sees butterfly boom
Tens of millions of butterflies have emerged from their chrysalises in the butterfly valley in Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture, southwest China's Yunnan Province, presenting an astonishing sight.
Located in Ma'andi Township in Jinping County, the butterfly valley has witnessed a flood of butterflies starting from May 18 – expected to peak on May 22 and last till June 20.
According to the observations made by local butterfly experts across 23 sites, it is estimated that the total number of butterflies emerging this year could reach around 100 million.
Due to warmer temperatures and rainfall, the "butterfly boom" this year occurred slightly earlier than usual, according to Yang Zhenwen, curator of the Jinping Butterfly Valley Museum.
"There will be about 20 million butterflies flying in the Yingpanshan mountain area, which is the best place to observe them," said Yang.
"We came from Guizhou, and this is the first time we have witnessed such a scene. As an ecological photographer, I have been to many places and seen numerous butterflies, but this spectacular sight is a first for me," said a visitor.
Experts say the massive emergence of butterflies in Yunnan is intricately linked to the excellent local ecological environment. Yunnan, located on a low-latitude plateau, boasts diverse weather patterns and rich ecological surroundings, providing ideal living conditions for butterflies.
Simultaneously, Yunnan's lush vegetation and abundance of flowers and plants offer a plentiful food source for these creatures. Furthermore, Yunnan's geographical position contributes to its rich butterfly diversity, transforming the region into a veritable "paradise" for butterflies.
