Chinese envoy to UN calls for strengthening cooperation in outer space
On June 19, the Chinese envoy to the UN called for strengthening international cooperation to promote aerospace development and man's peaceful utilization of outer space at the ongoing 67th Session of the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS), which is scheduled to last from June 19 to 28 in Vienna.
During the event, Li Song, permanent representative of China to UN Office and other international organizations in Vienna, said that the UN COPUOS, an intergovernmental platform that has championed multilateralism in space affairs, plays an important role in improving global governance of the peaceful uses of outer space, formulating outer space law system, and promoting international cooperation in outer space.
He stated China advocates that the international community should adhere to true multilateralism, safeguard the international order in outer space with the Outer Space Treaty as the cornerstone, and support the UN COPUOS in giving full play to its role as the main platform.
In a spirit of mutual respect and inclusiveness, all countries should focus on common interests, strengthen international cooperation, ensure the rights of developing countries to utilize space technology for peaceful purposes, as well as advance space technology development, thereby contributing to the realization of sustainable development objectives, Li added.
The Chinese envoy also introduced China's achievements in aerospace development. The Chang'e-6 lunar probe, for instance, launched in May this year, set a significant milestone by successfully taking off from the moon with first samples from the lunar far side. Additionally, the Chang'e-6 mission carried international payloads from France, Italy, Pakistan and the European Space Agency. China's International Lunar Research Station project has also inked cooperation agreements with numerous countries and foreign research institutions, he explained, adding that China will extend a warm welcome to all interested countries, international organizations and partners.
As threats and challenges to outer space security have been looming in recent years, preventing space arms race is an important prerequisite for ensuring peace, tranquility and sustainable use of outer space, Li stressed. He also said that the peaceful use of outer space should be handled properly to prevent the abuse of "security threats" by certain countries to undermine the equal access of developing and emerging space nations to outer space.
