Chinese FM urges G20 to advance, improve global governance

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Wednesday (Sep. 25) called on the Group of 20 (G20) members to take on the responsibilities of major powers and advance and improve global governance in a spirit of partnership.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks during a meeting of G20 foreign ministers held on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York.

The G20 should act as a supporter of UN reform, uphold genuine multilateralism and avoid selective multilateralism, Wang said.

The G20 should act as a promoter of global economic and financial governance reform, strengthen macroeconomic policy coordination, and advance reform of the global financial architecture to give developing countries greater representation and voice, said Wang.

The G20 should act as a promoter of global trade governance reform, work to create a just, fair, and non-discriminatory trade and investment environment, and oppose all forms of protectionism, he said.

The G20 should also act as a practitioner of reforms in global development, accelerating the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, added Wang.

Noting that peace and security are the common aspirations of people of all countries, Wang reiterated China's positions on the Ukraine crisis and the Gaza situation, saying that China is ready to uphold the spirit of partnership with the G20, follows the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and advocates an equal and orderly multi-polar world and inclusive economic globalization that benefits all, so as to share the fruits of development with people of all countries and build a better future together.
