Chinese-funded mega port in Peru set to open in 2025

The Chancay Port, one of the signature projects under the Belt and Road Initiative in Peru, is set to start operation in early 2025, according to the construction team.

Located about 80 kilometers north of Peru's capital Lima, the Chancay Port is funded and built by COSCO Shipping Ports, a subsidiary of China's COSCO Shipping Corporation.

The port includes a multi-purpose terminal, container terminals, and relevant infrastructure. It's a natural deep-water port with a draft depth of 16 meters.

In 2021, the first phase of the project started construction. With four berths planned, it has a designed annual handling capacity of one million 20-foot equivalent units.

The port is scheduled to be inaugurated in November and start receiving ships in the first quarter of 2025.
