Closer trade ties bring more Peruvian fruits to Chinese consumers

As cooperation between China and Peru continues to gain momentum, a greater variety of fruit has found its way into the Chinese market, benefiting people in both countries.

The bilateral trade between the two countries is expected to flourish further as the expansion of trade is high on the agenda of Dina Ercilia Boluarte Zegarra, president of the Republic of Peru, who arrived in Shenzhen on Tuesday evening for her five-day state visit to China.

China is Peru's largest trading partner and Peru is the fourth-largest trading partner of China in Latin America as well as the largest avocado supplier to the country.

Other Peruvian fruits such as bananas, mangoes, and blueberries have also become increasingly favored by Chinese consumers, and market demand continues to rise.

"The China-Peru Free Trade Agreement, which came into effect in 2010, allows Peruvian fruits to enter China with zero tariff, reducing our costs of import. So far, our import of avocados and tangerines have increased by about 20 to 30 percent compared to the same period last year," said Xu Hang, general manager of Shenzhen Oheng Import and Export, a Chinese buyer of fresh produce.

"The first five months of 2024 saw a total of 14,800 tons of fresh fruit, with a value of 350 million yuan (about 48.2 million U.S. dollars), imported from Peru through the Shenzhen Port, marking a year-on-year increase of 10.7 and 16.4 percent, respectively," said Zhu Jinfeng, a staff member with the Division of supervision on animal and plant quarantine of the Shenzhen Customs.

The trade volume between the two countries during the first two months of this year totaled 5.68 billion U.S. dollars, up 13 percent on a yearly basis, a promising sign.

Going forward, Peru will seek to export meat to China, a market that is estimated to be worth billions of dollars, amid a growing closeness between the two countries.
