Commemorations held across China to mark 79th anniversary of victory against Japanese aggression
Commemorations were held across China to mark the 79th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the global war against fascism on Tuesday, China's national Victory Day.
On Aug 15, 1945, the Chinese people's 14-year arduous fight against the invaders ended as Japan announced its unconditional surrender.
In a circular of 1951, the Government Administration Council of the Central People's Government of China declared Sept 3 as China's Victory Day.
At the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army Memorial Hall in Tonghua City, Jilin Province, visitors paid their respects to the anti-Japanese martyrs.
Students from Cangzhou City of north China's Hebei Province visited a martyrs' cemetery, learning about the significant contributions of these heroes and honoring their memory.
The Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders held a themed educational event where attendees recited anti-Japanese war poems, explored exhibitions, and engaged with the enduring spirit of anti-Japanese resistance.
The Nanjing Massacre occurred when Japanese troops captured the then Chinese capital on Dec 13, 1937. Over six weeks, they killed approximately 300,000 Chinese civilians and unarmed soldiers in one of the most barbaric episodes of World War II.
In northwest China's Yan'an City, a holy site of the Chinese revolution, visitors toured the Yan'an Revolutionary Memorial Hall and recalled the glorious years when the revolutionary ancestors fought against the Japanese invaders to defend their country.
In Datong City of north China's Shanxi Province, the Memorial Hall for the Great Victory of Pingxingguan put up an exhibition, featuring meaningful war relics and precious historical pictures and showing the bloody struggle of the Chinese people.
Memorial halls and history museums in northeast China's Chaoyang City and east China's Huangshan City also held grand memorial ceremonies to express grief and respect for the heroes.
On the same day, various activities to pay tribute to martyrs and promote patriotism were also held in Hulin City of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province and other places.
At the Museum of the War of People's Resistance Against Japanese Aggression in Beijing, a themed concert and exhibition showcased classic patriotic songs, inspiring visitors with the bravery and heroism of those who fought for their country.
The government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region held an official ceremony at the Hong Kong City Hall Memorial Garden.
Chinese soldiers also participated in a range of commemorative activities to honor the memory of those who sacrificed for the country.
