Endangered sturgeons released on national Fish Releasing Day

Conservationists in Shanghai and elsewhere in China have released tens of thousands of fish to mark China's Fish Releasing Day, which falls on June 6.

A total of 30 Chinese sturgeons and 30,000 mullets were released from Shanghai's Chongming Island into the Yangtze River.

The Chinese sturgeon, highly endangered, is a national first-class protected animal, while the more common mullet is a national second-class protected animal. Ahead of the release, all the sturgeons were installed with satellite markers to record and track their activities to provide data for follow-up assessments.

Scientists also labeled every sturgeon with a yellow tag.

"The tag has its number and the information of our center, which helps contact us in a timely manner if it is caught by mistake in the wild, or if it is discovered," said Wu Jianhui, head of resource detection division of Shanghai Aquatic Wildlife Conservation and Research Center.

Since 2004, Shanghai has carried out more than 40 release activities of rare and endangered aquatic creatures, with a cumulative release of more than 13,000 Chinese sturgeons, 340,000 roughskin sculpins and 595,000 Chinese mullets.

In Huangshang of central China's Hubei Province, about 4.1 million fish including spotted silver carp, silver carp and mandarin fish were released to Daye Lake.

"This time, we newly released the mandarin fish, a local fish species at the top of the food chain, to restore the aquatic biodiversity and promote ecological balance in the lake," said Wei Pusheng, person in charge of release team under the Daye Lake cultural travel company.
