Fujian advances marine protection with efficient mangrove planting
Fujian Province in east China has planted mangroves to advance marine environment protection.
The Zhangjiangkou National Mangrove Nature Reserve in the coastal province boasts the most diverse and flourishing mangrove natural community north of the Tropic of Cancer, with its 267 hectares of five species of mangroves constituting green barriers on the coast.
Since last year, the reserve has planted another 40.8 hectares of mangroves to consolidate the green barriers.
Starting in 2019, the nature reserve adopted a management of manpower plus machinery to get rid of smooth cordgrass, or saltmarsh cordgrass, a natural enemy of mangroves.
"Once the weeding was done, the reserve would restore the vegetation, to further the ecological restoration and improvement of the 40.8 hectares of tidal flat where the smooth cordgrass was weeded," said Huang Guanmin, director of the Research and Education Center of Zhangjiangkou National Mangrove Reserve.
Now entering a stable period with good growing conditions, the 40.8 hectares of tidal flat covered with newly planted mangroves have offered a pleasant ecological environment for bottom fauna and water birds.
"An obvious change is that the species and quantity of water birds in the reserve are increasing, especially the population and quantity of rare and endangered water birds represented by black-faced spoonbill are also gradually expanding," said Huang.
