Fujian, Guangdong carry out emergency response after typhoon-induced rainstorms

Rainstorms spawned by Typhoon Gaemi have hit China's coastal provinces of Fujian and Guangdong, causing floods and disrupting traffic, with local department carrying out emergency rescue and relief operations in affected regions.

Typhoon Gaemi, the third typhoon of this year, made its second landfall in China in Putian City of east China's Fujian Province on Thursday evening, according to the provincial meteorological bureau.

China's Ministry of Transport on Thursday upgraded the emergency response to Typhoon Gaemi to Level II, the second highest level.

Starting Thursday night, a heavy rainstorm spawned by the typhoon hit Sandu Township of Ningde City of Fujian, submerging streets and flooding residences in low-lying areas.

On early Friday morning, the local government organized over 120 personnel to evacuate residents to temporary resettlements.

"The water level has almost reached our knees. If the rain continues like this, the flooded area will become larger and larger, and the water level will go higher and higher, so we have to evacuate the people," said Xie Qingjian, worker of the city's Sandu Township government.

Meanwhile, emergency personnel were also draining floodwater. At 6:00 Friday, the water level has dropped significantly and the rain weakened.

The rainstorm also stroke the city's Xiapu County, bringing knee-deep water at several major road intersections, with traffic police setting up cordons to implement temporary traffic control.

At 13:00 Friday, local flood control personnel are standing by at the scene with prepared facilities to seize the low tide time window to drain floodwater on the major streets.

In supermarkets, the supply of vegetables, fruits, meat, eggs, milk, celery, rice, flour, grain, and oil was sufficient, and the prices were stable.

According to the flood control and drought relief headquarters of Xiapu County, a total of 14 towns and streets received a cumulative rainfall of more than 100 millimeters from 8:00 Thursday to 8:00 Friday, 35 houses collapsed or were damaged, and no casualties have been reported so far.

In Shenzhen City of south China's Guangdong Province, the Shenzhen North Railway Station on Friday suspended over 70 high-speed trains, including those heading for cities of Chaozhou, Shantou, and Xiamen. It also adjusted the operating ranges of some railway routes according to the changes in the affected areas.
