Germany holds dragon boat friendship race in Frankfurt

On May 25, Germany held the first Frankfurt International Dragon Boat Friendship Race and the opening ceremony of the 2024 Frankfurt Chinese Festival in the economic hub of Frankfurt to welcome the upcoming Dragon Boat Festival.

The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, traditionally falls on the fifth day of the fifth month in the Chinese lunar calendar. It will be on June 10 this year.

The dragon boat friendship race attracted 22 teams from countries including China, Germany, France, and Italy. Thousands of attendees, including representatives from Chinese and German political, economic, cultural, and sports sectors, as well as overseas Chinese, and Frankfurt residents, gathered for the event.

The dragon boat race site also hosted a variety of vibrant Chinese cultural performances and featured stalls offering a range of delicacies, creative cultural products, and Chinese books, allowing spectators to experience the charm of Chinese culture up close.

"People here exchange experiences and develop friendship through the competition. I believe this is a wonderful approach. I'm confident that this dragon boat race will be a new platform for interaction between the people of both countries," said Wu Ken, Chinese Ambassador to Germany.

Michael Borchmann, former head of the European and International Affairs Department of the federal German state of Hesse, said that the dragon boat race provides a platform for team members and spectators to interact and understand each other better.

"And this cultural event in general helps people coming together, and this is bringing our peoples closer together. It is something which is fascinating, dragon boat race, the colors of China," said Borchmann.
