Great Wall Scenic Area introduces drone delivery

The Badaling Great Wall Scenic Area in Beijing opened the city's first flight route for drone delivery service on Aug. 16.

The delivery spot for this route is set at No.9 Watch Tower of the southern extension of the Badaling Great Wall, which opened to the public in late 2023. This area retains most of the original ruined state of the ancient defense structure and provides limited access for adventure, hiking, field study, and summer camping groups, where no store facilities are available, making it hard for visitors to replenish food, water, and emergency supplies.

To shoot this trouble for visitors, the scenic area administration cooperated with the delivery company Meituan to launch this drone delivery route. Visitors can place orders through the mobile app and receive packages in a few minutes.

"Through drone delivery, we may cover the route that takes 50 minutes on foot in five minutes, and deliver heat relief items and emergency supplies to visitors. We can also provide emergency supplies to employees and people in need, and carry back garbage generated by visitors on the return flights," said Yan Yan, public affairs director of Meituan's drone business.

Beijing has constantly expanded low-altitude services in the past few years, including pilot license training and viewing the Great Wall from a helicopter or fixed-wing aircraft.
