Greece announces closure of Acropolis amid scorching heatwave

Greece has announced the temporary closure of the ancient Acropolis of Athens on Wednesday under a scorching heatwave, which also suspended schools.

The site contains the remains of several ancient buildings of great architectural and historical significance, the most famous of which is the Parthenon.

According to the announcement, the site was closed from noon to 17:00 on Wednesday to protect visitors from the heatwave.

Despite that it is currently the peak tourist season in the Mediterranean country, the number of tourists on the streets of Athens, including bustling shopping hub Ermou Street, has decreased remarkably due to the high temperature.

Athens's elementary schools and nurseries are also shut from Wednesday to Thursday. The city has also set up a phone helpline and opened air-conditioning facilities for people.

It is forecast that the highest temperature in some parts of Greece may reach 43 degrees Celsius on Thursday. The latest round of high temperatures is expected to persist until Friday and start dropping from Saturday.
