Heavy rains, floods kill at least 45 in Yemen

Heavy rains and floods have killed at least 45 people in northern Yemen, according to local health authorities and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Meanwhile, Houthi media outlets reported that dozens more were injured.

Many valleys in the region were cut off, isolating communities and hindering rescue efforts.

The natural disaster has also caused severe damage to infrastructure and property.

Yemen's National Center of Meteorology has warned of possible continuing rainstorms across the country and advised people to avoid flood-prone areas.

Yemen has been embroiled in a devastating conflict since late 2014, when the Houthis seized control of the capital, Sanaa, and large parts of the country. Although a UN-brokered truce in April 2022 led to a significant reduction in hostilities, the government continues to face severe economic challenges and political divisions.

The latest natural disaster is likely to worsen the challenges faced by a population already struggling with widespread poverty, malnutrition, and limited access to basic services.
