Int'l parliament leaders acknowledge China's contributions to global development

International parliament leaders acknowledged China's contributions to global development and hailed its valuable lessons to developing countries when the country's top legislature marked the 40th anniversary of its affiliation to the global organization of parliaments, the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

The commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the National People's Congress (NPC)'s affiliation to the IPU and the opening ceremony of the 2024 interregional seminar on the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for parliaments of developing countries started on Monday, gathering parliamentary leaders and representatives from 32 developing countries.

"The IPU is a platform to communicate and to debate on resolutions and to talk about the SDGs, et cetera. So, all of those are important for all the democracies, the parliaments in the world. The fact that China is taking part an active role in the IPU since 40 years, that is very positive. Now, with regards to Chinese aid to countries around our region in the world, it's significant. I think China has done a lot in the African continent," said Adrien Charles Duval, speaker of the National Assembly of Mauritius.

Sunita Baral, a member of the Parliament of Nepal, said the global organization of national parliaments helps build up inter relations and pan out the common issues and common agendas.

"We have many issues as like that poverty, climate and environment. And maybe some countries are education sectors. China is to lead behind these different issues and keep together all the countries, developing countries, and keep growing," she said.

Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik, bureau chief of the People's Majlis of Maldives, said China has increasingly emerged as a prominent player in global development, offering valuable lessons and insights to developing countries striving for progress.

"IPU, the rest of the members and the Inter-parliamentary Union itself will learn a lot more from China's part of the story. The development, the success of China means quite a lot. This means the members of parliament, those who visit China and see these things by themselves, would understand how they would be able to monitor their own situation back at home, what are the amendments they might need to bring into the existing laws or the new concepts that they might need in order to progress," he said.
