Largest pet fair in Asia opens in Shanghai

Pet Fair Asia, the largest fair for the pet industry in the Asia-Pacific region, opened Wednesday in China's financial hub Shanghai, with the event showcasing over 2,000 new products and attracting both local and international visitors.

The five-day fair is set to be the largest one since its launch in 1997, gathering more than 2,500 exhibitors from China and all over the world to showcase pet services and products-- from pet food to supplies and accessories, grooming, healthcare, veterinary, and technology.

"We are here to get the best deals. We have cats. We have three cats. We want to see pet snacks and tools," said a visitor.

"Our pet store has been open for around five years. We come here every year to see new products. We must come here every year, otherwise, we won't keep up with the trends," said another visitor.

As the fastest-growing pet industry in the world, China's fluffy friends are welcoming a wide range of products that are made exclusively for them. Pet companies are racking their brains to meet the sophisticated demands of pet owners.

Healthy and longevity has been a key topic at this year's fair. Pet food giant ADM unveiled three new products at the show, focused on kidney and intestinal health.

"We expect that in 2025 in China, 30 percent of pets will reach old age. So, you can think about what this means for pets. There will be specific needs that need to be addressed, for example, bone health, joint health, digestive health, teeth health. This is what ADM is aiming for and this is what our product launches are going to respond to," said Fabiana Bianchi, nutrition APAC President of ADM.

Considering that China has a population of 1.4 billion, the pet market remains massive with over 105 million families owning pets across the country.
