Off-season snow play becomes hottest cool-down trend in Beijing
In the scorching summer, Beijing's indoor ice and snow parks are bucking seasonal trends and drawing throngs of visitors seeking to escape the heat.
While temperatures outside soar past 30 degrees Celsius, an indoor ice and snow entertainment and sports complex in Beijing offers visitors a chance to escape the summer swelter and immerse themselves in a frozen wonderland, where the mercury dips down to around six degrees below zero Celsius inside its climate-controlled facilities.
Here, guests don thick winter coats and enjoy a range of snowy attractions, from captivating snow show to thrilling ice slide rides. They can also meet and greet adorable penguins in a dedicated exhibit area.
"Experiencing snow in the summer creates a thrilling contrast between fire and ice. I feel so excited," said a tourist.
According to the staff, since its opening in July, the complex has attracted 2,000 visitors daily, demonstrating strong demand.
"We chose to launch in the summer in response to the national initiative encouraging 300 million people to participate in ice and snow activities. Our goal is to provide these activities year-round," said Wang Yang, general manager of the complex.
According to data from e-commerce platform Meituan, the search volume for "indoor ski resorts" has increased by 178.1 percent year-on-year over the past month.
The strong desire to engage in ice and snow activities during the summer is supported by advancements in technology.
"Previously, we could only import indoor snow machines from Switzerland. However, in the past two years, several domestic companies have developed versions suitable for indoor use, which has reduced our procurement costs by nearly 60 percent," Wang said.
