Over 8,000 children under 5 in Gaza treated for acute malnutrition : WHO
More than 8,000 children under five years old have been diagnosed and treated for acute malnutrition since the start of the ongoing Palestinian-Israeli conflict in October 2023, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Wednesday.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus made the remarks at a media briefing, saying that among the 8,000 children, 1,600 are suffering from severe acute malnutrition.
There have already been 32 deaths attributed to malnutrition, including 28 among children under five years old, he added.
Tedros said inability to provide health services safely, combined with the lack of clean water and sanitation, significantly increase the risks for malnourished children.
About 90 percent of children in Gaza lack nutrition and face severe threats to their survival, growth and development, according to a report released by the United Nations children's agency UNICEF a week ago.
