Over half of structures in Gaza destroyed or damaged: UNOSAT

Over half of all structures in the Gaza Strip have been destroyed or damaged since the current round of conflict between Palestine and Israel erupted last October, according to the latest data released by the United Nations Satellite Centre (UNOSAT) on Monday.

UNOSAT said on X, formerly Twitter, that they found more than 137,000 buildings in Gaza have been affected when comparing satellite images taken in May this year with images captured before and just after the outbreak of the conflict.

UNOSAT said there are more than 16,000 severely damaged structures and 47,368 moderately damaged ones.

A total of 137,297 structures, or about 55 percent of the total in Gaza, are affected, the organization said on X.

The governorates of Deir Al-Balah, in the center, and Gaza, in the north, had suffered the worst damage between April 1 and May 3, according to UNOSAT.

The agency stressed that the findings were still part of a preliminary analysis, which had yet to be validated in the field.

UN special coordinator for the Middle East peace process Tor Wennesland said that he had visited the Gaza Strip on Monday and witnessed the enormous impact of the conflict.

Urgent action is needed to alleviate the humanitarian crisis facing the Gaza Strip, he said.
