Peng Liyuan attends China-US youth cultural, sports exchange event in Beijing
Peng Liyuan, wife of Chinese President Xi Jinping, attended a cultural and sports exchange event for the Chinese and U.S. youth in Beijing on Tuesday, saying friendship between the young people from both countries can inject positive energy into China-U.S. relations.
During the event at Beijing No.8 High School, Peng met the youth delegation from the U.S. state of Washington, and said she was glad to welcome the teachers and students to China to learn more about the country.
Peng, along with domestic and foreign guests, watched a friendly basketball match between the Chinese and American students, and awarded commemorative medals to the players.
She also watched a video highlighting the delegation's visit to China.
Also at the event, representatives of the U.S. students shared their unforgettable visits to various provinces and cities across China, where they engaged in different ethnic customs and experienced traditional Chinese culture.
Lincoln High School Assistant Principal Logic Amen recalled hosting President Xi and Peng during their visit to the school in 2015, and expressed gratitude for Xi's care and support for youth exchanges between the two countries.
He said that he is eager to help forge closer bonds between the people from the two countries.
Noting that the future of China-U.S. relationship rests on the young people, Peng encouraged the U.S. students to share memories of their trip to China with their families, friends and teachers when they return to the United States.
In November 2023, during his trip to San Francisco, Xi announced an initiative to invite 50,000 young Americans to China for exchange and study programs over the next five years.
The delegation with about 100 teachers and students from over 10 schools in Washington is visiting China at the invitation of the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries.
