Protectionism sacrifices future of Canadian EV industry: spokesman

China urges Canada not to politicize economic and trade issues, emphasizing that protectionism only harms Canadian economy itself, said a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman on Tuesday, in response to Canada's newly-announced imposition of 100 percent import tariffs on China-produced electric vehicles (EVs).

"A spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce has made clear China's stern stance on this matter. It is important to emphasize that Canada's actions ignore objective facts, disregard WTO rules, and go against historical trends, representing a typical protectionist approach. This not only damages China-Canada economic and trade relations and harms interests of Canadian businesses and consumers, but also does not contribute to Canada's green transition or global efforts to combat climate change. China expresses strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition," Lin Jian, the spokesman, said at a press conference in Beijing in replying to a media query.

"Subsidies cannot create industry competitiveness, protectionism only protects backwardness and sacrifices the future. China's EV industry has rapidly developed through continuous technological innovation, a well-established supply chain system, and sufficient market competition. This is a result of comparative advantages and market forces working together. China urges Canada to respect objective facts, adhere to WTO rules, immediately correct its wrongdoing, and not to politicize economic and trade issues. China will take all necessary measures to firmly protect the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises," Lin said.
