Record tourist numbers in Xijiang during May Day holiday
Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region received more than 8.5 million tourist trips during the five-day May Day holiday that ended Sunday, according to the regional bureau of culture and tourism.
During the holiday, Xinjiang handled some 8.56 million tourist trips, marking an increase of 6.3 percent from the same period last year. Tourism revenue reached about 8.08 billion yuan (about 1.14 billion U.S. dollars) during the holiday, up 33.87 percent year on year.
During the holiday, Xinjiang took full advantages of its rich natural and cultural resources to attract visitors.
In Turpan City of Xinjiang, as the weather warms up, over 3,600 hectares of mulberries in the Grape Valley are entering harvest season. Tourists visited the Grape Valley during the holiday to pick ripening mulberries and enjoy the traditional singing and dancing performances.
During the holiday, the Ancient Yotkan Town in Hotan prefecture attracted visitors with theatrical performances and local delicacies. On the first day of the holiday, the ancient town received more than 8,000 visitors from all over the country.
Meanwhile, the Sayram Lake in Bortala Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture, the largest and highest alpine lake in Xinjiang, received over 194,800 tourists during the five-day holidays, registering a tourism revenue of 161 million yuan (about 22.76 million U.S. dollars).
