South China's mega cross-sea link to open to traffic in June
The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link, a major cross-sea highway connecting the southern Chinese cities of Shenzhen, Zhongshan and Guangzhou, is scheduled to open to traffic at the end of June.
The new link is located south of the Humen Bridge and north of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. The 24-kilometer link will cut travel time from Zhongshan to Shenzhen from the current two hours to less than half an hour, significantly improving connectivity in the Greater Bay Area, one of China's most economically dynamic regions.
Construction of this cross-sea complex began in December 2016 and includes a submerged tunnel, artificial islands and bridges, one of which is a suspension bridge with a main span of 1,666 meters that has broken several world records.
Yang Yang, manager of the project, said the main bridge of the link has the capacity to support both land and sea transportation in the region and withstand the environment at sea.
"The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge is now the world’s highest offshore sea bridge, standing 91 meters above the water with a record navigable clearance of 76.5 meters. It is on the main waterway of Lingdingyang Bay, through which close to 4,000 ships pass every day. Its navigable height can accommodate ships carrying up to 30,000 containers. Situated at the mouth of the Pearl River, it is designed to withstand strong winds of up to 88 meters per second. The link will play a crucial role in promoting the formation of a one-hour living circle within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area," he said.
