Sudan sees surge in serious, petty crimes

Sudan's year-long war has unleashed a wave of violence and displacement, fueling a surge of both serious and petty crimes.

According to police reports, more than 50,000 complaints were filed between last June—two months after the war started—and April of this year.

Police in Sudan say there has been a significant increase in petty crime and general lawlessness in the country, a trend related to the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces.

The war has displaced millions of people, crippled the economy, and forced many—often totally out of character—to break the law just to survive.

Car thefts topped the list at 37,000, followed by over 13,000 reports of financial crimes.
