Torrential rain & floods batter Southern China
Torrential rains have inundated parts of the southern Chinese provinces of Fujian, Guangxi, and Guangdong, triggering severe flooding and prompting urgent rescue and relief operations.
In Guangze County of Fujian Province, heavy rain began at 06:00 on Tuesday, leading to peak flood water levels between 230.4 and 230.9 meters, or 1.9 to 2.4 meters above the warning levels. This resulted in extensive urban water-logging and trapped many residents.
The Chinese People's Armed Police Force unit in the area was promptly dispatched to the scene, equipped with over 100 pieces of rescue equipment, including assault boats, rubber boats, and life jackets, to carry out rescue operations and assist in the transfer of affected individuals and the transport of supplies.
The officers and soldiers conducted swift investigations and focused on reinforcing the defense of geological disaster sites, such as slopes, buildings, and areas prone to landslides, to prevent further damage.
By 08:00 on Tuesday, the combined efforts of rescue teams had successfully evacuated 69 people who were trapped.
In Jianning County of Fujian Province, heavy rain on Monday caused urban water-logging and power outages. Local departments quickly dispatched emergency personnel to address the situation.
In Guangxi Province, Luocheng Mulao Autonomous County experienced heavy rain, with 33 weather stations recording 24-hour precipitation between 100 mm to 250 mm, and the maximum rainfall of 202 mm in the area's Tianhe Town.
Local traffic police cleared debris from flooded roads and guided vehicles away from danger, while emergency services worked to evacuate people from low-lying areas. Schools were temporarily closed to ensure student safety.
In Guangxi's Guilin Ziyuan County, the orange heavy rain warning was upgraded to red on Monday -- the highest one in a four-tier system -- and a third-level emergency response for flood disasters was initiated. Local personnel actively organized flood control measures.
In Binyang County of Guangxi, two individuals were rescued by the local fire department after being trapped by a flash flood in Gutuo Village in Litang Town, following days of heavy rain.
In the neighboring Guangdong Province, Meizhou City has been hit by heavy rain since Sunday.
Although the rain has temporarily weakened, some low-lying villages remain flooded. Residents were evacuated to safe locations, and the water level, which had peaked at 85.60 meters at 04:25 Monday -- 5.6 meters above the warning level -- has since receded.
