Water level of Dongting lake drops below warning mark

211The water level of Dongting Lake, China's second-largest freshwater lake located in Hunan Province, fell below the warning mark on Wednesday, according to the Hunan Hydrology and Water Resources Survey Center.

The Yueyang hydrologic station saw the water level dropping below 32.5 meters and continued to decline on Wednesday. Local authorities also announced that water levels in the entire Dongting Lake basin had fallen beneath the warning level.

Meanwhile, over 300 types of equipment were utilized for drainage operations at the Tuanzhou embankment following the closure of dike breach on Monday.

The breach, 226 meters wide, occurred on Friday afternoon in Tuanzhou Town under Hunan's Yueyang City, and prompted the evacuation of over 7,000 residents.

Experts cautioned that despite the receding water levels in the region, vigilance against floods remains crucial due to prolonged inundation and recent stability issues concerning dikes surrounding Dongting Lake.

Prior to the breach, Hunan Province experienced 17 consecutive days of heavy rainfall, the longest period of regional heavy rain since 1961.
