Western hinterland thrives with caviar industry development

An once underdeveloped county seated deep in the mountains of southwest China has embarked on a fast lane to development by leveraging its unique local advantages to establish a thriving caviar industry.

Tianquan County in southwest China's Sichuan Province is home to the largest sturgeon farming base in the province, which boasts the world's second-largest output of sturgeon caviar.

In the county, one of the largest local sturgeon farms alone produces about 12 percent of the caviar sold across the world.

Tianquan is located in the transition zone from the Sichuan Basin to the Tibetan Plateau, with an elevation difference of more than 4,000 meters.

The meltwater of alpine snow and ice provides clear and pure water resources rich in a variety of minerals and trace elements for sturgeon breeding bases.

At present, one of the largest local bases has bred a total of five different sturgeon species, such as the Siberian sturgeon and Hybrid sturgeon.

After 10 to 15 years, the mature sturgeons will be transfered to the workshops for roe extraction processing. And then the workers will marinate it for 7-8 months before it is on offer.

The annual yield of caviar in Tianquan County has grown from 20 tonnes in 2019 to 60 tonnes in 2023 and the caviar has been exported to more than 30 countries and regions around the world.

In addition, the provincial authorities have also lent substantial support to local exporters.

The Chengdu Customs has provided a green clearance channel for Tianquan's caviar exporters since 2023 to help them supply freshest caviar to overseas consumers within the shortest possible time.

Local sturgeon farmers have also upgraded their breading technique and infrastructure to promote the fish's spawning rate.

The farmers now harness equipment of B-scan ultrasound to judge the number and size of the roe and the growth of the sturgeons so as to screen out high-quality mature sturgeons more accurately and ensure the spawning rate of each fish.
