Xi hails Olympians for winning glory for country

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday hailed Chinese Olympians for their outstanding performances and level of sportsmanship shown at the recent Paris Olympics, saying they have won glory for the country and the people.

Meeting China's Olympic delegation for Paris 2024 at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, Xi urged the Olympians to make further efforts to build China into a global sports powerhouse.

"At the Paris Olympic Games, you forged ahead with united efforts, strove for better results, and fulfilled your missions. You achieved the best result in the history of China's participation in the Summer Olympics outside of our country, and achieved successes in both sports competition and sports ethics, bringing glory to our motherland and the people. On behalf of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council, I'd like to welcome your triumphant return, express my warm congratulations and sincere appreciation, and extend my heartfelt greetings to the comrades working hard in the sports sector across the country," Xi said in a speech at the event after greeting the delegation members and posing for a group photo.

Xi said that the outstanding achievements of the delegation are not only a concentrated manifestation of the development and progress of China's sports industry, but also an epitome of the achievements of Chinese modernization, fully demonstrating China's strength in the new era.

China's ability to rank among the world's major sporting and Olympic powers is fundamentally due to its growing comprehensive national strength, which has provided advanced scientific and technological support and solid material supply for sports training, and created a favorable environment and broad public foundation for the growth of sporting talents, Xi said.

As China embarks on a new journey in the new era, the cause of building a great country and moving toward national rejuvenation on all fronts through Chinese modernization will certainly create better conditions for and inject strong impetus into the development of China's sports sector, Xi said, urging continued efforts to vigorously develop people-centered sports, and promote the deep integration of the nationwide public fitness campaign and the national health programs, so as to advance the cause of building China into a sports powerhouse and promote the Healthy China Initiative.

Xi said that the delegation, through its outstanding performance, has vigorously promoted the Chinese sports spirit and the Olympic spirit, and vividly interpreted the Chinese spirit in the new era, adding that the athletes put their motherland first, fought for the glory of the country, and demonstrated their perseverance and unrelenting belief in self-improvement, as well as the invaluable qualities of unity and cooperation, and the confident, optimistic, warm and friendly temperament of China's young generation.

"You showed the whole world the profound accumulation of excellent traditional Chinese culture, the open, inclusive and enterprising spirit of China, and the ambition, sharpness and strength of the Chinese people. The motherland and the people are proud of you and give you all a big thumbs up!" said the Chinese president.

Xi stressed that the Chinese delegation's moral integrity and sportsmanship won wide respect and recognition at the Paris Olympics, fully demonstrating the image of China in the new era.

Pointing out that the athletes have already entered the preparation period for the next Olympics, Xi urged humility, patience and greater efforts from all involved in the sports sector to improve the level of training and competition, work to overcome weaknesses, speed up talent cultivation, and carry out high-quality preparations.

"Competitive sports and mass sports complement each other. I hope that you can further enhance China's comprehensive strength of competitive sports, promote the vigorous development of our nationwide public fitness campaign and youth sports, and make new contributions to the cause of building China into a sports powerhouse," Xi told the delegation.
